The Importance of Rainfall at Current Season in Brazil

by Jan 17, 2024Coffee0 comments

Brazil is currently at the coffee bean development phase, during summer time. While the temperatures rise and the days lengthen, the rains, as natural regulators, conduct an essential process that nourishes the coffee trees, directly impacting on the quality of Brazilian coffee. The Contribution of Water to Coffee Plant Nutrition

Water plays a key role in the nutrition of coffee plants. During the bean development phase, rainfall provides a vital reserve of moisture to the soil, reaching the roots of the plants and initiating biochemical processes that are essential for the growth of the beans.

Through water, nutrients in the soil solution such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are absorbed by the roots, which are essential for the plants’ healthy and strong development. This nutritional contribution is particularly significant during this time, when the coffee beans are at inicial stage of formation. The right balance of these and other nutrients not only boosts the complete formation of the beans, but also plays a crucial role in the characteristics of the final drink.

Rainfall as an Optimizer of Water Resources

North Minas origin

In addition to nutrition, rainfall plays a role in optimizing water resources for farmers involved in coffee growing. This is because the availability of water that rain brings can significantly reduce dependence on artificial irrigation systems, giving producers considerable savings in terms of operating costs and water consumption.

By taking advantage of seasonal rainfall, coffee growers are able to maximize the use of resources, contributing to a more sustainable production in harmony with the environment.

In this context, the interconnection between water and the nutrition of coffee plants is essential, since well fertilized soil full of nutrients is only effective for the plant when water is present, as it carries the nutrients to the plant. Rainwater, then, plays an irreplaceable role, impacting not only on coffee, but on the ecosystem as a whole.
